He needs to start dressing like Slash
I have already posted about my loathing for Lil Wayne’s inexplicably popular “Prom Queen,” the first single off his rock record. Rappers focus on big money making rock in their samples and beats, but why not branch out when there’s great stuff going on in the less mainstream? Kanyeezy already did this with Peter, Bjorn, and John’s ‘Young Folks.‘ Here are ten indie/rock songs that Weezy should sample or at least draw inspiration from. Disclaimer: indie’s a broad genre now so don’t nitpick on me readers. The point is these songs rock. They all will yield a better beat than Fall Out Boy samples.

10) My Morning Jacket- Highly Suspicious- Take out the vocals, beef up the drums in the hook, add a little Weezy growl, and we have a BANGER.

9) One Day As A Lion- If You Fear Dying- This one’s easy. The song already lends itself to rap because of Zack de la Rocha’s vocals but Mr. Carter can definitely make this his own.

Portishead- Machine Gun- Though there is going to have to be a little production to get a good hook in here, this tracks unique percussion gunshots are begging for Young Money’s stylings. Even the haunting vocals create a spooky atmosphere.

7) Why?- The Vowels Part 2- Here’s a track that Weezy could do slow a la ‘I Feel Like Dying.’ Take away the vocals, add some purple drank and you reveal a more complex beat. I think Lil Wayne would be impressed with Yoni’s songwriting too.

6) Portugal the Man- Hard Times- If they really push the horns out in this track, I could see Wayne and a few friends making this song the jam of the recession. It’s eerie, yet so persistent that a sped up version with heavy drums could be an anthem.

5) The Kooks- Do You Wanna?- If Weezy did this, I’m sure he’s not gonna be purring out ‘make love,’ but something similar/dirtier could produce a bumpin’ and/or grindin’ jam.

4) The Hold Steady- Hot Soft Light- The riff this opens with is enough on its own to make a sick beat. Though it’s a shame to take Craig Finn’s lyricism away from anything, some solid production on that powerful riff could be magic.

3) Pixies- U-Mass- This needs to be sped up and then it sounds like a beat that will just flow.

2) Modest Mouse- Shit Luck- All it needs are some hip hop drums and the job’s done for you. I say keep the vocals and Weezy can WREAK HAVOC on the rest.

1) The Ting Tings- Great DJ- This one’s numero uno because it seems to be the most likely to happen. Wayne, this group has the sample potential of a rock and roll M.I.A. Shut Up and Let Me Go might be easier to work with but I’ll stick with the drums. the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums.
Mr. Carter, slap on some headphones and listen to these. At very least you get some ideas. You should also check out the new release from midwest rapper P.O.S., Never Better.

It takes punk rock influences like Fugazi and makes rap flow over them. And it’s a DAMN good album. Here’s a link to the stupendous track, Savion Glover.
